Google announces Android Ice Cream Sandwich

Google presented Android Ice Cream Sandwich

Google has on its own event, presented Android Ice Cream Sandwich. The software, which is suitable for tablets and smartphones, includes a renewed lock-screen, notifications, an application launcher and widgets.

It is clear that the interface has elements of ICS Android Honeycomb. For example, the three software buttons at the bottom are taken from the tablet version of Android. The application launcher and a number of widgets are Honeycomb inspired. Widgets finally can be re-sized. The Action Bar is now also built in ICS: this menu at the bottom of the screen contains a number of contextual buttons that per application may vary. The multitasking system from Honeycomb, (including showing thumbnails of recently opened applications) is also built in.

The new Android Ice Cream Sandwich

According to Engadget the video is made by someone who bought a Nexus S on eBay and to his astonishment he found a test version of Ice Cream Sandwich on his phone. Ice Cream Sandwich will, if the video is authentic, have many elements borrowed from Android Honeycomb, the tablet version of Android. There is the "multitask menu, and the main menu has been changed. There are no buttons on the screen available for Home, Menu and Back, something that Honeycomb still has.

This will probably be the version wich will be installed in the new upcoming 2 din car audio systems. As it will have better support for hardware needed in a car.

Ice Cream Sandwich is the next version of Android, but Google has announced very little about it. The new version will probably announced about two weeks from now, when Googla and Samsung will have a press conference at the CTIA.

Now you can order one :D

This is the first android based car audio set which is available, well the first one I stumbled upon. It is now for sale for 595 euros / 815 dollar

Apparently the machine has 2 OS's, for the DVD video and parking camera there is not yet a good android driver or something, so these systems has to work with Win 6 CE :(

android inplane multimedia boeing 787
Aircraft manufacturer Boeing will use Android to provide audio, video, and specific applications for their 787 Dreamliner passenger jet. Passengers will have their own touchscreen.

Depending of the class, there will be variety of screens between 7 and 17 inch. Even economy class passengers will have access to a touchscreen to control their Android system. The screens are mounted on the back of the chair. In the business class are more and bigger screens available.

There will be some special apps for the passengers, probably flight info and a booking app.

Well good to see that more companies adopt Android for audio and video applications and not automatically choose for software from Apple and Microsoft like eg BMW.

Car radio with separate android tablet?

I just stumbled upon a car stereo with a separate android based tablet attached to it. As a gadget freak I ordered it directly for my car to test it. As soon as it arrives I will write a review!

Did anyone order this one already?

edit sept 6: via Emmanuel I got to the following rns 510 clone, sounds also very interesting :)

edit sept 7: grrr, just got a message from the supplier that they don't have these for a while. Got my money back and now looking for another model.

cnet’s handson: Parrot Asteroid

Although the Asteroid is based on Android 1.5, you wouldn't be able to tell just by looking at it. The interface of the single DIN unit looks nothing like any Android device that you've likely ever seen. It's been heavily simplified and optimized for in-car use. Half of the unit's face is covered by a full-color 3.2-inch TFT display, while the rest is occupied by the physical controls. There are dedicated buttons for telephony, audio source selection, and voice command. A large rotary controller with a central button alternates between volume control and interface navigation. Finally, the unit's Android roots show in the Back, Menu, and Home buttons.

Gone are the desktop and app-drawer UI metaphor and the touch sensitivity. The Home menu is navigated with the rotary controller for selecting from available apps, which show up as large icons on the 3.2-inch display. I thought that I'd miss the touch sensitivity, but the single DIN form factor and physical controls were surprisingly intuitive. I was able to quickly jump between audio sources and applications with ease.

Dynavin E46 on Android!!!

Android on a Dynavin. On a VERY LIMITED number of units Dynavin has replaced the current WindowsCE based GPS hardware with Android hardware. Those of you who are familiar with Android know that it is a popular open source mobile device operating system that can run "apps" and in theory allow the dynavin to increase its functionality without the need for "hacks." Due to very limited parts availability and very long lead times dynavin is not expecting to produce any more of these Android units until late this year.

I will have a look if I can find one of these beauties for my own e46 ;-)

Thanks Bob!
